Support Your Body Naturally through Cold and Flu season

I’ve been pretty healthy in the last several  years, only going to the doctor maybe once every other year. So imagine my horror when I contracted the flu from my husband.It was awful! Thankfully my husband was mostly over his when I got sick (something I attribute to him never receiving vaccines - but that’s a post for another day!) so he was able to do things for me while I was recovering. 

I was doing several things naturally to support my body through the flu that may have also had the added benefit of temporarily putting my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms into remission temporarily. I gotta tell ya, plain old body aches beat RA pain anyday.  

Here’s what I did:

  • Sipped on a good quality coconut water as often as tolerated. My favorite brand is Harmless Harvest. It’s always the fastest hydrating and it’s always fun to try and find a pink one!

  • Drank tons of bone broth, usually about 32 - 36 ounces daily. Mine was homemade and was so easy to make in my Instant Pot. Recipe I base mine off of here.

  • High doses of Vitamin C as tolerated. I took both chewable and tablets, taking approximately 2.6 grams per day.

  • Followed modified BRAT diet - using gluten free toast from Canyon Bakehouse, no rice (my body doesn’t tolerate it well), organic applesauce (that my body ended up not liking either) and under ripe bananas. The resistant starch did wonders to keep up my energy.

  • Diffused my favorite antiviral essential oils (Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, Rosemary and Lemon oils) pretty much 24/7 and applied a Eucalyptus blend as needed on my chest and throat for cough and sore throat. Get my favorite one here

  • Drank at least 70 oz of water as tolerated (over half my body weight)

  • Took 10,000 IU's of Vitamin D drops daily

  • Consumed 2-3 drops nascent iodine twice a day

  • Drank Peppermint and Chamomile herbal teas to both keep my passages clear and help soothe me to sleep at night. I added some local honey to help keep probiotics in my body and to soothe my sore throat

One thing I didn’t do was take anything for my fever. It wasn’t that high (maybe 102 at its highest) so I allowed my body to use the fever to fight off the virus. I have an autoimmune condition currently so I needed to be as kind to my body as I could without pushing it too far.

I’m not a medical professional, so I can’t say this will work for you, just that it helped me as I was healing from both types of flu. PLEASE do what I did and seek out a professional opinion before starting any sort of treatment. I’m so glad I was able to support my body naturally, with a little help from an antiviral, which I think helped tame my EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus) down while I wasn’t feeling well. This helped eliminate any rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, which was a HUGE relief! I can’t imagine dealing with an RA flare AND the flu. That would’ve been really miserable!
